Directory Traversal

@backstage/plugin-catalog-backend is a The Backstage backend plugin that provides the Backstage catalog

Affected versions of this package are vulnerable to Directory Traversal via URL normalization inconsistency in CatalogRules.ts, where catalog rules for URL locations are matched against the raw, non-canonical form of a URL target while the actual content is fetched using the canonicalized (dot-segment-resolved) form. An attacker can craft a URL containing percent-encoded dot segments (e.g. %2e%2e) or other encoding tricks that appear to belong to an allowed location scope during rule matching, but resolve to a different, potentially restricted scope when the URL reader fetches the content. This allows the attacker to bypass catalog ingestion rules and register entities from locations that should be denied.

How to fix Directory Traversal?

Upgrade @backstage/plugin-catalog-backend to version 3.9.2, 4.0.2 or higher.

Incorrect Authorization

@backstage/plugin-catalog-backend is a The Backstage backend plugin that provides the Backstage catalog

Affected versions of this package are vulnerable to Incorrect Authorization in DefaultCatalogProcessingOrchestrator during catalog processing, where the type field of a registered location entity is not validated against the configured allowed location types. An authenticated attacker can register a location entity with an arbitrary type value, bypassing the intended type restrictions and causing unintended location types to be processed by the catalog backend.

How to fix Incorrect Authorization?

Upgrade @backstage/plugin-catalog-backend to version 3.9.1 or higher.

Server-side Request Forgery (SSRF)

@backstage/plugin-catalog-backend is a The Backstage backend plugin that provides the Backstage catalog

Affected versions of this package are vulnerable to Server-side Request Forgery (SSRF) via the relativeUrl function in PlaceholderProcessor.ts, where a catalog entity placeholder value referencing a path is resolved against a base URL without validating that the resolved URL remains within the same repository. An authenticated attacker with permission to register or modify catalog entities can supply a placeholder path that resolves to an arbitrary external repository or host, causing the backend to fetch and potentially expose the contents of files outside the intended repository.

How to fix Server-side Request Forgery (SSRF)?

Upgrade @backstage/plugin-catalog-backend to version 3.9.1 or higher.

Prototype Pollution

@backstage/plugin-catalog-backend is a The Backstage backend plugin that provides the Backstage catalog

Affected versions of this package are vulnerable to Prototype Pollution through the catalog API due to improper user input sanitization. An attacker can interrupt the service by using a specially crafted query.

How to fix Prototype Pollution?

Upgrade @backstage/plugin-catalog-backend to version 1.26.0 or higher.
