CWE-787  (opens in a new tab)

How to fix?

Upgrade Debian:unstable grub2 to version 2.12-6 or higher.

NVD Description

Note: Versions mentioned in the description apply only to the upstream grub2 package and not the grub2 package as distributed by Debian. See How to fix? for Debian:unstable relevant fixed versions and status.

A flaw was found in grub2. When reading tar files, grub2 allocates an internal buffer for the file name. However, it fails to properly verify the allocation against possible integer overflows. It's possible to cause the allocation length to overflow with a crafted tar file, leading to a heap out-of-bounds write. This flaw eventually allows an attacker to circumvent secure boot protections.
