CWE-863  (opens in a new tab)

How to fix?

Upgrade github.com/external-secrets/external-secrets/runtime/template/v2 to version 1.2.0 or higher.

Overview

Affected versions of this package are vulnerable to Incorrect Authorization via the getSecretKey function. An attacker can gain unauthorized access to secrets across namespaces by exploiting the function's ability to bypass security mechanisms and retrieve secrets using elevated privileges. This can result in privilege escalation, data exfiltration, or compromise of sensitive credentials.

Workaround

This vulnerability can be mitigated by using a policy engine such as Kubernetes, Kyverno, Kubewarden, or OPA to prevent the usage of getSecretKey in any ExternalSecret resource.
