Affected versions of this package are vulnerable to Missing Authentication for Critical Function via the rclone rcd --rc-serve process. An attacker can execute arbitrary commands as the process user by sending unauthenticated GET or HEAD requests to specific paths, which trigger backend initialization with attacker-controlled inline remote configuration. This is only exploitable if the remote control API is enabled, reachable by the attacker, deployed without global RC HTTP authentication, and the --rc-serve flag is in use.
This vulnerability can be mitigated by configuring HTTP authentication on the remote control API using --rc-user, --rc-pass, or --rc-htpasswd, or by not using the --rc-serve flag if file serving is not required.
