CWE-20  (opens in a new tab)

How to fix?

Upgrade k8s.io/mount-utils to version 1.25.16, 1.26.11, 1.27.8, 1.28.4 or higher.

Overview

Affected versions of this package are vulnerable to Improper Input Validation via the MountSensitive and removeSMBMapping functions in the mount_windows.go file. An attacker with access to create pods and persistent volumes on Windows nodes can escalate to admin privileges on those nodes.

Note:

This is only exploitable if the Kubernetes clusters are using an in-tree storage plugin for Windows nodes.
