CWE-787  (opens in a new tab)

How to fix?

There is no fixed version for busybox.

Overview

Affected versions of this package are vulnerable to Out-of-bounds Write in the tokenize process. An attacker can achieve arbitrary code execution or cause a denial of service by injecting a malformed entry that leads to an out-of-bounds write of heap pointers. This is only exploitable if the attacker already has root privileges and can modify protected system files such as /etc/group or /etc/passwd.

Workaround

This vulnerability can be mitigated by ensuring /etc/group and /etc/passwd are writable only by root and protected by mandatory access controls, and by monitoring these files for unauthorized modifications.
