CWE-674  (opens in a new tab)

How to fix?

Upgrade ImageMagick/ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-12 or higher.

Overview

Affected versions of this package are vulnerable to Uncontrolled Recursion via the SVGStartElement and ResizeQuantumMemory functions. An attacker can cause application crashes or resource exhaustion by submitting SVG files that trigger excessive memory allocation.

PoC

  1. Generate an SVG file.

  2. Read this file using ImageMagick:

./magick /data/ylwang/Tools/LargeScan/targets/ImageMagick/test++/1.svg null
  1. This causes a denial-of-service (DoS) condition.
