CWE-416  (opens in a new tab)

How to fix?

Upgrade unbound to version 1.25.2 or higher.

Overview

Affected versions of this package are vulnerable to Use After Free in the DNS-over-TLS forwarding or stub zone handling process when configured with a #authname suffix. An attacker can cause the daemon to crash by exploiting precise timing during transient network failures. This is only exploitable if DNS-over-TLS forwarding or stub zones with a #authname suffix are configured.

Workaround

This vulnerability can be mitigated by avoiding the use of a #authname suffix in DNS-over-TLS forwarding or stub zones unless necessary, and by restricting network access to the Unbound instance to trusted clients only, such as through firewall rules limiting inbound connections to the DoT port (typically 853) from secure sources.
